The Roy Rogers restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio (photos)

While driving through Cincinnati on Labor Day, I came across a place I had always wanted to go. No, not the WKRP studios. A "Roy Rogers" fast food place (check out their website) I guess I'm a sucker for a fast food place named after a cultural icon.

Watch my amateurish travel log here:

(3 minutes long)

I've known about these places for years but have never been to one nor seen one.  They are mostly in the south. I think Ohio is one of the few Midwestern states with one.

I first saw the bare parking lot and dark interior. "Oh, no", I thought, "the place must had gone out of business". But to my relief they were just closed for the day. I could not resist taking a peek inside.

Thought I wasn't expecting Planet Hollywood-type costumes or props, I was happy to see the interior walls of the dining room adorned with some photos of Roy, Dale, and friends. I bet alot of kids sat in there asking their moms and dads, "Who's Roy Rogers?"

Time to get back on the road. I've got another 4 -1/2 hours to go until I'm back home...

  1. Tom, Thank you for sharing your travel logs with us...

I think.. I would try something on the menu.. just to see what it was like.

  2. Yeah, maybe a beef or chicken. While I was there, several cars came by the drive thru wanting to order (but they were closed).

So people must like to go there.

  3. I ate at one in a DC bus station back in the 1990s--I ordered fried chicken, and it was very good.

They used to dot the landscape along the WV turnpike many years ago, but the last time I was up that way I didn't see any.

  4. Tom, this was a fun post. I LOVED Roy Rogers when I was a kid. I watched his show all the time, with Dale and Trigger and Roy's side-kick (wasn't it Gabby Hayes? My memory may be faulty). He was so handsome and sang so beautifully. I still remember all the lyrics to "Happy Trails To You." Thanks for the memories.

  5. There are Roy Rogers, a # of them, in the MD/PA area. In fact, here they are franchises & the main ofc is in Frederick, MD. Well-kept, food is usually better than most fast food places. Memorabilia is here & there on the walls but I've never heard any music remotely reminiscent of Roy himself or the era.

  6. It's so funny to me that you don't have these! I grew up on Roy Roger's, there is one near my house. Their hamburgers are the best out of any other fast food chain around here.

  7. Hi Ivan, I've been told there were a few in the Chicago area - but this must have been YEARS ago - I've never seen one. Something tells me they they won't be around for very many years, but I could be wrong.

Hi CB, yeah the sidekick was Gabby Hayes. I think these restaurants are a fun nostalgic place, but these modern kids today probably know nothing about Roy Rogers. I'd like to ask the cashier and manager if they know who Roy Rogers is. That would be fun to find out.

Hi Linda, yeah I was wondering about the music. They probably have Top 40 playing. Ive never been to Maryland yet so I'll have to keep in mind that there's one there when I make it up there.

Hi Sarah, have you ever asked the person taking your order if they know who Roy Rogers or Dale Evans is? ha ha.

Next time I go (when they are open) I'll have to try a sampler - a hamburger, some fried chicken, and a beef.

  8. Tom, they have had a revival of sorts in the MD/PA/WV area, since that particular franchise is home-based here. And I doubt they'll be going anywhere any time soon. They are ALWAYS packed. As said, you can stack their food up against any other fast food & Roy's comes out on top.

  9. Linda, thank you for clarifying. Here I was thinking they're on the verge of bankrupcy.

I had no idea they were giving their competitors (Arby's, etc.) such a run for their money.
