This is one of those films that I like but almost everyone hates it, or dislikes it. I always found it really quirky and liked seeing new characters in Oz. I saw it first on a black-and-white TV in the late 80s, and it really captivated me. I still enjoy it. Starring Fairuza Balk, Piper Laurie, Matt Clark, Nicol Williamson, and Jean Marsh.

ReplyDelete“The Draughtsman’s Contract.” One whose judgment I really respect asked me “how could you like that pretentious piece of rubbish.” Another shakes his head in disbelief, and my wife looks on and shakes her head despondently. Who can say? I like Greenaway and particularly in his earlier work -- and this was made before he completely fell off the wharf. Best. Gerald
"Return to Oz" is a gem in my book; it's very dark and strays far from the 1939 movie...not necessarily a bad thing, but most likely why the majority of viewers didn't care for it when it was released. It is much closer to the books that Baum originally wrote.
ReplyDeleteHi Dave - I agree. The two movies have very different styles. This one worked for me, and introduced me to some new characters from Oz. The one thing that confused me is how Dorothy first met Jack and Tick Tock. That wasn't established early on in the film.
ReplyDeleteSpeak for yourself, I freaking love Return to Oz!! It was such a trip, man... the lady who changes heads and everything? Awesome.
ReplyDeleteI know! My favorite scene is the ornament room scene. Great adventure.
